Paul - just thought I'd supply you and others with the details of the camp site in Albert.
It's more than likely you are familiar with it, but here's the contact details for those who are not.
Camping Municipal d'Albert
'Le Velodrome'
Avenue Henri Dunant
80300 Albert
The bloke in charge, Jean-Michel Dufourmantel, is a real local character and can be contacted on:
03 22 75 22 53
His English is limited but he seems to understand more than he speaks. The cost for a tent per-night (last Summer) was 4 Euros, 6 with a car. Hot showers are 1 Euro a time. Good site but gets a bit noisy on weekend evenings with his disco. Still, never any problems.
Hope this helps anyone still struggling with accomodation for next year.

You'd never have heard anyone say that 15 years ago!!!
Times have changed - it used to be awful!!!

Dave,
it sounds as if the statement drink a lot of beer and fall over a great deal? may influence the verdict

Very possibly Peter
Although 15 years ago, that description could have been me and my oppo! (and it was still bad!)
I have heard that it has recently been much improved though and is now pretty decent. Personally though, I'll probably still stick to those that I know are OK (ie Authuille).
(I must say that, even 15 years ago, the Albert velodrome was an absolute godsend to an extremely weary pair of footsloggers with 4 stone Bergens on their backs fresh off the train from Paris after slogging it around the Luxembourg Ardennes! We'd have never made it to Authuille!)

| Rumjar! Welcome aboard! And G'Day from Oz mate. Very hot but nice to be home. Fly back in a week. And I agree with a previous poster about the Velodrome camping in the past. Anyone remember that bunker-like toilet block? Revolting! |

Is the campsite at Sailly le Sec(Puits Tournants) a little too far from the July 1st action.I am a little concerned about traffic over the period as it's about 14 km from Albert. Ten years ago when I was there for the 80th things weren't too bad but this year????? Then I stayed with the caravan at Belleville, Authuille which was OK but a little basic.Probably too late to get in there now anyway but it was ideally placed.I recall walking up through Authuille to Thiepval on the evening of June 30th for a fantastic son et lumier
which used the memorial edifice as a giant screen to show audio visual images on.
Any comments about Sailly le Sec and its distance from Albert will be gratefully taken on board.

It's not that far - it should only take you about 25 minutes up to the main battlefield area. There are going to be travel restrictions all over, of course. _________________ Somme Battlefields Website: http://www.somme-1916.com/ |
